Oil Pulling, Cooking, Run, Squat

Happy hump day! This week is going by pleasantly fast, eh? Hope yours is, too!

I’m sure most of you have read or heard about oil pulling, which is one of the more recent trends in health. Someone posted about it on Facebook weeks ago and I figured I would give it a try but of course forgot about it. Typically when I get home from work it’s close to 8 PM and I want nothing to do with anyone or anything (sorry John) and I get right in bed and I’m done. The thought of gurgling around coconut oil for 20 minutes seemed too much until finally yesterday. I have been sick on and off for over a month now, and with John having bronchitis now I really want to ward off what I can. I actually felt really sick Monday and yesterday and am still coughing but praying it’s just that and maybe allergies. Anyways, I used 1 tsp of Trader Joe’s organic coconut oil and swished and pulled it around my mouth for a little over 13 minutes!

photo 1   1 tsp is PLENTY. I cannot imagine a full tablespoon since it turns really liquidy after just a few minutes. I brushed my teeth after spitting it out in the trash can (you don’t want to spit it out in the sink because it can clog) and truthfully my mouth felt extra clean for hours afterwards. I’m not aiming too high with this because I just know I won’t do it every day, but I’m going to give it a try a few times a week because it can’t hurt! Hopefully it will whiten my teeth, boost my immune system and just generally flush out the toxins in my body. I for one am also not someone who really tries out any health fads mostly because I’m lazy and then usually because I’m a skeptic. I cook with coconut oil and there is no denying it’s health benefits and the way it makes food taste, so I see no problem in trying to get an ounce healthier by pulling it through my teeth. I’m not expecting any miracles, ya know? I’ll let you know if my teeth seem whiter in a few weeks!

I have been so bad about cooking lately and even worse about making food to bring for lunch. I have kinda given up on caring because my schedule has been crazy for the last 3 months with teaching so much, so food prepping has been in the back of my mind. I still try to choose a healthier lunch when I’m buying and I don’t think I’m spending too much more than I would be if I prepped. But dinner is what I really need to get better at because it’s been too many weeks of either going to bed without eating dinner (falling asleep out of exhaustion) or grabbing pizza or sushi. I want to get out of that habit so I made sure to cook a good meal last night which I will be repeating for sure.

This was one of the best dinners I’ve EVER made! So simple and cheap, too. I also made a green smoothie for dessert to participate in Jen’s 31 day green smoothie challenge for this month. photo 5 This was a big handful of spinach (stems removed), sliced banana, 1/2 cup unsweetened vanilla almond milk, 1/2 small container of strawberry Chobani and ice all blended. I threw in some frozen raspberries for good measure. This was delicious and I liked that I didn’t have to add any stevia or splenda to it. I most likely won’t stick to having 1 every day for the next month, but a few times a week at least to get an extra boost of nutrients.

This morning I FINALLY dragged my butt out of bed to run. I actually have not run since my half marathon over 2 weeks ago. Isn’t that crazy and sad? Just no desire to, so I felt there was no reason to force myself to. I want to keep loving running forever and truthfully I need breaks here and there. I was talking about this to one of my friends at the gym last week, and she feels the same way. She also runs a killer half marathon and multiple marathons a year. She takes sometimes a full month off if she is feeling blah about running to always keep it exciting. And my 2 mile run this morning did just that. I felt super awkward for the first half mile like I had never run before, but once I got in my groove it felt so great. Sure my legs were itchy and burning, but it felt fun again and it hasn’t felt fun in months. I have 3 half marathons in the next month and a half so it’s not the best idea that I’m just now starting to build a base, but I also ran a half 2 weeks ago on no training and did just fine. It’s really mind over matter. My cardio base is more than maintained from teaching spin multiple times a week, so my only goal is to run for the thrill of it. Oh, and to eat a lot of pizza and froyo, but you knew that 😉

One more thing- I love these challenges I see every month on Instragram and I am going to follow this one. I used to do a bunch of squats every day and I want to get back into that.

Need to work on my 35 for the day! I also want to set a goal of 15 push-ups minimum a day for the rest of the month, too. I got so lazy with anything other than spin the last couple of months!

  1. Funny, until last month I’d never heard of oil pulling — and now I’ve seen it pop up at least 5x !! A bit afraid too try it..though I do love using coconut oil for many things: eye makeup remover, in my bath, on the ends of my hair, and SHAVINGGG. It’s great !

  2. Never tried oil pulling… seems like a strange fad but who knows.
    Anyways, funny story about challenging yourself everyday to do 15 pushups: I started with 10 every day, then got to 12 and now I’m at 15, full and regular to the floor kind. But for some reason the best time I like to do these is right after the shower. Maybe because I’m invigorated and awake and it gets my arms killer for the day, but whatever it is, I love it!

    • Girl that’s awesome!! I can do 3 real ones then I drop to my knees. Hoping to do 10 consecutive by the end of the month maybe! 🙂

  3. Just swished some oil. Eh, it’s okay but I don’t see me doing it often. I will stick with putting it on elbows and feet at night

  4. Haven’t tried or pulling.. didn’t know what it was until this post. 🙂 I really don’t think I’ll be trying it any time soon.
    Good challenges! I’m not a big fan of squats (weird, I know, everyone is doing them) but 15 push ups a day sounds like strong arms just a month away..

  5. I just heard about oil pulling maybe a week ago and tried it a couple nights. Knock on wood my immune system is like Fort Knox so I haven’t been sick in ages but I am going to try to do it a few times a week. You should check out Hello Fresh for dinner help.     • Yes! That was one of the benefits for it that i’ve read in every article! Someone said my skin looked so great this morning, but i think thats mostly because i have a little tan right now 🙂 haha

  6. Try pulling in the morning, before you eat or drink anything. The point of oil pulling is to get rid of the toxins that build up overnight! I’ve noticed that I feel so much more awake after I pull!

    • I need to wake up just 5 mins earlier and do it!! Its just so hard because i want to chug a gallon of water within 5 seconds of being awake! lol
